food truck evolution?

did it start with a big bang or was it divine invention? the debate has raged for years with neither side giving any ground. Back and forth, back and forth with each cycle causing beliefs to become more entrenched, more ingrained in a persons core.

at smorgie we look past this debate, because we believe, and hope that someday you will too, that it doesn’t matter how it happened, we should just all be happy that the food truck is here.

so next time your friends start arguing about the origin of food trucks, (did it come about when a pizza delivery van, trying to deliver pizza in less than 30 minutes, crashed into a fine dining establishment? or was it divine invention like the street corner foodies preach.) we ask you to please, drop the debate, grab a korean taco and eat.

Peace.

save a fish update your list

the waiter welcomed me with a sly smirk and gentle nod of the head as though there was an inside joke between us. i had never been here before but a memory tingled in my mind like a vision just out of view.

“your seat sir”, he said showing me to a table that seemed hauntingly almost painfully familiar. without glancing at my menu I had a premonition of what I would order as though the menu had already been imprinted in my mind.

In stark contrast to typical embarrassing events I did not walk into the kitchen en route to the restroom. It was as though I knew where I was going.

like a flounder smacking me in the face (you’ll understand this analogy in a second) it hit me that i had been at this restaurant just last week. in fact my date had thrown her meal, which happened to be flounder, in my face. (there it is)

i forgot to update my smorgie list of best places to take a date and ended up back at the restaurant

things change and as you visit places on your smorgie list you should update them. add notes, add photos, move items to new lists and remove restaurants where you have a tendency to stare at the waitresses unintentionally upsetting the person you’re with.

robert frost is lost

two roads diverged in a wood, and i – i took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

because i got lost.

i ended up sleeping in a tree for eight days subsisting off pine cone soup, tree bark jerky and caterpillar ceviche.

a road is well traveled because it’s the right road.

when you search for a place on smorgie you’ll see lists that contain your search item on the right. these are lists created by other smorgie users with like tastes. click on those lists and look for other suggestions from people who have gone down the restaurant path before.

smorgie for prez

on this presidents day we at smorgie like to reflect on our role in the creation of the united states of america. we’ll retell the story in case you forgot it.

one day george washington was very hungry so he asked his friend benedict arnold for some restaurant suggestion inspired by local cuisine.

benedict sent george a list called ‘colonial cooking’ through the e-mail feature on smorgie.

george was happy and along with his best friend thomas jefferson they went out to try the local fare. (they used the iphone download to map out directions, and follow notes left by benedict) as george and tom visited the first restaurant they realized that it and all the other restaurants on the list were actually british chain food restaurants. benedict had betrayed them.

george and tom were so upset they decided to write a petition to close down the british chain restaurants called “the declaration of independent restaurants” (based on a smorgie list they created) that in effect didn’t allow chain restaurants to be opened up in their neighborhood. after they received 56 signatures on their petition they sent it to their local government who closed down all the chain restaurants in the area.

the ‘fish and chips conglomerate’, ‘bangers and mash consortium’ as well as the ‘afternoon tea sandwich cooperation’ got really upset because of all the franchise fees they were losing. this led to a scuffle between england and the colonies with the colonies finally winning and the united states of america being established.

true story.

evolution of smorgie

a few years ago, a couple of really smart people developed something called running. this new invention was the greatest thing before sliced bread and it’s main purpose was to help people get away from animals trying to eat them. the inventors of running developed a process to achieve running which included crawling and then walking.

a couple years ago, a few different but equally smart people developed smorgie. this new invention has been the greatest thing since sliced bread and was invented to help people get to the food they were trying to eat faster. working with the people who developed running smorgie implemented the same three step (no pun intended) process.

add the location of a restaurant to your side board. personalize it with notes and photos. finally, after you’ve mastered the two previous steps, organize your places into lists.

you have to crawl before you can run so take your time. fill up your side bar, take your time with notes then organize your lists.

sightseeing smorgie

Some people find the culture and soul of a city in its architecture; strength in the flying buttresses of Notre Dame, whimsy in Gaudi’s Casa Batllo, tears in the onion shaped roofs of Moscow.

At smorgie we find the culture and soul of a city in its food. For that reason we built a smorgie list and challenged ourselves to go around the world in 80 days. Our list contains cuisine from all over the world so that we can learn the true culture of every nation through its most valued commodity: food.

(While for practical purposes we went with the around the world in 80 days theme, if you know of any restaurants 20,000 leagues below the sea or on the way to the center of the earth, please make a list and share it with us.  We always travel with the smorgie iphone app.)
